about

Had this one chilling in the vault, but it needed to be set free. Zaouli is an African from central Ivory Coast where my father is from. It consist of fast, intricate movements of the arms, legs, and hips, accompanied by traditional drumming rythms. The anklets worn by the dancers also give an added percussive element to go along with drum circle.
The dance has been a way to bring unity to the Villages. Each village has a male Zaouli dancer to represent them and they each wear the Zaouli mask while performing. Boys train for 7 years before they can master the Zaouli dance.

The dance is starting to become more globally known in recent years, and if you’re familiar with Chicago Jook dance then you can trace its roots back to Zaouli. A clip of a Zaouli dancer can also be seen in M.I.A.s video for Swords. I also my own a Zaouli mask. Happy black African history month!
